The energy force behind Taste of New Haven is known as The Pizza Guru and his name is Colin M. Caplan. Part man, part pizza, all passion.
Colin has made it his mission to elevate his hometown of New Haven through positive interactions. He researches, writes and educates about local history. He designs community spaces as an architect. He leads thousands of people on tours around town to show off the world-class culture, cuisine and craft that has been redefining the New Haven community.
Caplan is an entrepreneur, architect, author, historian, educator and tour operator running Taste of New Haven food tours and events, Elm City Party Bike and Paddle Pub party boats, as well as tour operations in Florida. He is author of six books on New Haven history including Pizza in New Haven, is a National Historic Register consultant and was a visiting professor at Wesleyan University. Caplan is also a film and media producer including the documentary Pizza, a love story and Slice of America. Caplan has spearheaded declaring New Haven the Pizza Capital of the United States and making Connecticut The Pizza State. He continues to help build and raise his native Elm City through teaching students, researching & writing history and providing opportunities to communities, businesses and residents through grants and events. He also has been trying to make Pizza the official State Food of Connecticut since 2021 with multiple bills that have not had a chance to be fully cooked. His latest endeavours are creating the Connecticut Pizza License Plates, holding the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Title for Largest Pizza Party on 9/12 and co-curating the New Haven Pizza History exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz” at the New Haven Museum.
